The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) constructed a Nuclear Power Plant at Barakah (BNPP), UAE, to generate electricity. KEPCO was awarded as the main contractor for this project and awarded subcontract work to NMDC. National Marine Dredging Company conducted marine dredging works and breakwater construction which included dredging of an intake channel for cooling water intake, discharge channel for hot water release and a navigation channel for wharf access.
The total area dredged was approximately 2.35Km2 at the final depth of the channels, which range from -5.5 MSL to --9.5 MSL. The dredging works for the project have removed in excess of approximately 9,000,000 m3 of dredged materials.
The dredging works were carried out in strict accordance with Environmental guidelines and restrictions detailed within the Marine Dredging Environmental Management Plan (MDEMP).
This MDEMP, in consultation with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), is in accordance with the Marine Dredging and Reclamation Guidelines of the Abu Dhabi Emirates (EAD, 2010).
